Before you order — measure these four things

• Ceiling height. Subtract the assembled height from your floor-to-ceiling measurement. Leave at least 30 inches above the top mattress so the top sleeper can sit up.
• Mattress thickness. Top bunks cap mattress thickness so the guardrail still stands at least 5 inches above the mattress. Thicker is not safer.
• Doorway and stair access. Bunk beds arrive as long flat cartons. Check the carton dimensions on the product page against your narrowest turn.
• Who sleeps on top. Weight limits differ between the top and bottom bunk, and adult-rated models are a separate category from children's.
